Campervan Camping in a City

Campervan in Chester car park as an overnight stop.

We’re not long back from a ‘Sea & the City’ camping break in Wales which included Chester (the city part) and Anglesey (the sea part). But Chester is special when it comes to campervanning as you can park overnight in the car park there for only £8.

Chester is one of my favourite cities to visit as, not only does if have a lot of history to explore, it has serious shopping and coffee shops to die for. We even managed a fun Ghost tour that took us to parts of the city we wouldn’t normally see and it’s always fascinating to hear about the ghostly inhabitants.

But Chester is special if you are in a campervan as there is a large car park near the river (Little Roodee car park) where they welcome campervans and motorhomes to park overnight. It is a 10 minute walk into the centre from the car park so it is great for a weekend as you can go out in the evening and not worry about having to drive back to a campsite.

We did think it might be noisy overnight but it is really quiet and very secure as it has barriers stop working between 10.30pm and 7am so there will be nobody driving around while you are sleeping. There are also plenty of CCTV cameras so it is pretty secure. There are no facilities but there is a nice cafe in the car park and you can use the loos there when it is open during the daytime.

As it is next to the river, you can also go for a nice early morning walk and find yourself on the old Roman walls that surround the city.

It worked out as £8 for our overnight stay (over 12 hours) but if you do a ‘short’ overnight you would end up paying only £5 (up to 12 hours). But make sure that you buy your ticket from the lower ticket machine when you enter at the barrier as the higher one is for coaches and costs a bit more.
