I know it seems a bit strange to be talking about motorway services for good food but the new services near Gloucester on the M5 are really something else. Even the TV comedian, Josh Widdecombe, was raving about them on Radio 4 the other day…
Glyn and I like to make our campervan holiday journeys as much fun as possible so try to find somewhere nice to eat en route. As we were travelling up the M5 to Yorkshire the other day we decided to pop in to the new, deluxe services between junctions 11a and 12. Even the design of the building is clever – it looks a bit like a neolithic round barrow and blends magically in to the landscape.
Inside you have a huge seating area overlooking a waterfall and you can sit outside and enjoy the countryside on a nice day.
The coffee is good, the sandwiches are real ones, the hot meals are restaurant-style (Glyn really likes the lasagne) and the cakes are to die for. The restaurant says that it’s important that their produce is local, seasonal and that the food is home-cooked. There is also an up-market Farm Shop where you can treat yourself to some yummy goodies for your trip.
It really is worth a stop, especially if you are a Foodie, and makes your journey just a little bit special.
Checkout this Foodie Heaven on the M5
Prices: Main meals around £8-£9, sandwiches and cakes normal sort of restaurant prices.
